    Acer storage over the years

Until about 2012, almost every Acer laptop used a removable 2.5-inch hard drive. Drives from this era fail mechanically: clicking heads, stuck motors and bad sectors. They are recovered in the cleanroom.

From 2013 to 2018, Acer mixed hard drives, SATA SSDs and the first M.2 SSDs. Many Aspire E, V and F models have a hard drive, while thinner Swift and S models moved to SSDs.

From 2019, most Acer laptops use NVMe M.2 SSDs, and many larger Aspire and Nitro models keep a spare 2.5-inch bay. Low-cost Aspire 1, Swift 1, Go and Chromebook models have eMMC storage soldered to the board.

Windows 11 laptops usually have device encryption switched on. The recovery key is in your Microsoft account, so have it ready.
